‘Her experience of the presence of God‘
There is a character in the album whose presence permeates the story, alongside the mother, but without taking a vocal role in the narrative. The character is called ‘her experience of the presence of God’. If this were being performed as a piece of musical theatre, I imagine a mime artist performing this role.
Through the story, the mother increasingly has an experience of sensing God’s presence in the room with her. Examples are found in song 3 (When will it be my turn?), in which we hear her quote verses from the Bible as she reminds herself of God’s promises of comfort and strength:
‘Our God is close to the broken-hearted’ (Psalm 34 verse 18)
‘He comforts all those who mourn’ (Matthew 5 verse 4)
‘His strength is made perfect in my weakness’ (2 Corinthians 12 verse 9)
‘Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow’ (From the hymn ‘Great is Thy Faithfulness’, words by Thomas O. Chisholm, used by permission of Hope Publishing.)
Song 11 (‘Blessing’) is sung prayerfully.
The extended piano solo at the end of song 6 (Night feed) marks a moment when the mother, having placed her sleeping child back down in the cot, lingers in the middle of the night, and, for a moment, experiences herself being tenderly rocked and cared for by the presence of God.
